Anthropic has started rolling out India-specific pricing for its Claude AI assistant, allowing users to pay in Indian rupees instead of U.S. dollars. The move highlights India’s growing importance for the AI company, which now considers the country its largest market outside the United States.
For Indian users, this change removes one of the biggest barriers to subscribing to Claude: international payments and currency conversion charges.
India Is Now Claude’s Second-Largest Market
India has rapidly become one of Anthropic’s most important markets.
According to the company’s data, India accounts for around 5.8% of global Claude usage, making it the second-largest market after the United States. The country also leads in technical usage, with developers using Claude heavily for coding, debugging, and software development tasks.
This strong adoption has encouraged Anthropic to invest more heavily in the Indian market.
Claude Users Can Now Pay in Rupees
Until now, Indian subscribers had to pay for Claude plans using international cards and U.S. dollar pricing.
That often resulted in:
- Currency conversion fees
- Additional GST charges
- Bank processing costs
- Unpredictable monthly billing amounts
With the new pricing model, users will see final subscription costs directly in Indian rupees, making the service easier to understand and budget for.
New India Pricing for Claude
Anthropic has introduced local pricing across multiple subscription tiers:
- Claude Pro: ₹2,000 per month with annual billing or ₹2,399 monthly.
- Claude Max: Starts at ₹11,999 per month.
- Claude Team: Starts at ₹2,399 per user per month.
The prices include GST, giving customers a clearer picture of their total costs upfront.
Why India Matters to Anthropic
India has become one of the fastest-growing AI markets in the world.
Anthropic has already expanded its presence in Bengaluru and continues to grow its local partnerships with enterprises, startups, and developers. The company previously reported that its revenue run rate in India doubled within just four months, largely driven by demand for Claude’s coding tools and enterprise products.
Companies across sectors such as aviation, IT services, healthcare, education, and legal technology are increasingly adopting Claude for productivity and automation use cases.
Competition in India’s AI Market Is Intensifying
Anthropic’s move comes as competition in India’s AI market continues to grow.
OpenAI, Google, Perplexity, Microsoft, and several local AI startups are all competing for developers, businesses, and students in one of the world’s largest technology markets.
By offering localized pricing, Anthropic hopes to reduce friction and increase adoption among Indian users who may have hesitated because of international billing requirements.
A Sign of a Larger Trend
Claude’s rupee pricing reflects a broader shift in the AI industry.
Global AI companies are increasingly adapting products, pricing, and infrastructure to local markets instead of relying on one-size-fits-all global strategies.
India’s large developer ecosystem and growing AI adoption make it one of the most important battlegrounds in the global AI race.
For Anthropic, local pricing may be only the beginning of a larger push into India.
