Cisco to Cut More Jobs to Accelerate Its AI Strategy

Cisco Systems is moving ahead with another major workforce restructuring as it shifts more resources toward artificial intelligence, cloud infrastructure, silicon, optics, and cybersecurity. The networking giant plans to cut nearly 4,000 jobs—less than 5% of its global workforce—as part of a broader strategy to accelerate AI innovation and strengthen its position in the rapidly growing AI infrastructure market.

The announcement comes despite Cisco reporting strong financial results, underscoring a growing trend across the technology industry: companies are reducing headcount in some areas while increasing investment in AI-driven products and infrastructure.

AI Becomes Cisco’s Top Priority

Cisco said the restructuring is not simply a cost-cutting exercise but a strategic move to redirect investment toward high-growth technologies.

According to the company, the additional resources will support areas including:

  • Artificial intelligence infrastructure
  • Custom silicon
  • Optical networking
  • Cybersecurity
  • AI-powered enterprise networking

CEO Chuck Robbins said companies that succeed in the AI era will be those willing to continuously reallocate resources toward emerging opportunities.

Nearly 4,000 Roles Affected

The restructuring will reduce Cisco’s workforce by fewer than 4,000 employees, representing less than 5% of its global staff.

The company expects the restructuring to cost up to $1 billion, with part of the charges recognized immediately and the remainder spread into the next fiscal year.

AI Demand Is Driving Growth

Ironically, the layoffs come during one of Cisco’s strongest financial periods.

The company reported:

  • Record quarterly revenue
  • Stronger-than-expected earnings
  • More than $5.3 billion in AI infrastructure orders from hyperscale customers
  • Increased its AI infrastructure order forecast to $9 billion for the fiscal year

Demand for networking equipment that powers AI data centers has become one of Cisco’s fastest-growing business segments.

Investing in the Future of AI Infrastructure

Cisco is expanding its AI strategy beyond traditional networking hardware.

The company is investing heavily in technologies that support next-generation AI systems, including:

  • High-performance networking
  • AI data center infrastructure
  • Enterprise security
  • AI-ready silicon
  • Optical interconnects

These investments are designed to help cloud providers and enterprises deploy increasingly large AI workloads efficiently.

Part of a Broader Industry Trend

Cisco is not alone in restructuring its workforce to prioritize AI.

Across the technology sector, companies are reallocating budgets toward AI research, infrastructure, and automation while reducing investment in slower-growing business units.

This trend has affected several major technology firms, reflecting the industry’s race to compete in artificial intelligence.

Why This Matters

The AI race is no longer centered solely on building smarter models.

Companies are now competing to own the infrastructure that powers artificial intelligence, including cloud platforms, networking equipment, AI chips, and cybersecurity solutions.

Cisco’s restructuring highlights how traditional technology companies are transforming their organizations to meet this shift.

The Bigger Picture

Cisco’s decision to reduce its workforce while simultaneously increasing AI investment reflects a major change in the technology industry.

Rather than slowing down, companies are redirecting talent and capital toward AI infrastructure, where demand continues to grow rapidly. As enterprises and cloud providers invest billions in next-generation AI data centers, networking and infrastructure companies like Cisco are positioning themselves to play a central role in powering the future of artificial intelligence.
